Alleged calls from the bank took only third place. Two other types of Internet-related scams caught up with them.
The most common types of fraud in Ukraine are related to online orders, phishing and fake calls purporting to be from “banks”. The head of the department for combating types of online fraud of the Cyber Police Department, Alexander Ulyanenkov, spoke about this in an interview with Media Detector.
He noted that the cyber police checks all requests daily and divides them into subcategories.
“The main subcategory that we see today is the non-delivery of orders made via the Internet. It applies to the purchase and sale of goods on the Internet, placing an ad for the provision of certain services, and at the same time accepts partial or full prepayment. In the second place is this phishing, where, using social engineering methods and software, links are made similar to the original sites.
At the same time, he noted a decrease in the number of calls from scammers posing as employees of banking institutions. This happened thanks to the cooperation of law enforcement officials with the banking regulator and the banks themselves.
According to the law enforcement official, the cyber police is taking steps to block the numbers used daily for fraudulent purposes.
“We also neutralized many scammers in penitentiary institutions, from where such calls were often made, and identified their accomplices “on the outside” who cashed out the embezzled funds Therefore, seeing We saw a significant decrease in the number of such calls, but this type of fraud still exists,” said Ulyanenkov.
Over the past year, the number of appeals by citizens to law enforcement officials due to the actions of Internet attackers has decreased, but at the same time, the number of exposed fraudulent groups has increased. In the eight months of 2024, cyber police neutralized 23 organized groups – six more than in the same period last year.
A day before it was reported that a fraudster had been exposed who defrauded the mother of the deceased defender. He took advantage of the woman’s weak emotional state and convinced her that he was the one who expedited the payment process.
