In the city of Toropets, Tver region of Russia, on the night of September 18, an explosion and a huge fire occurred.
SBU and GUR drones attacked a large warehouse of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense in Toropets, Tver Region on the night of September 18. The warehouse stored missiles intended for the Iskander operational- tactical missile system, Tochka-U tactical missile system, KAB and artillery ammunition. After the UAVs arrived, a very powerful detonation of an earthquake began in the region. Local authorities announced the evacuation of the population.
Drone strikes
In the evening, the governor of the Tver region, Igor Rudenya, reported about the fire in Toropets. According to him, the fire broke out “as a result of the falling debris of the UAV while repelling the attack of the air defense forces.” He did not specify which facility was attacked.
In recent months, Russian governors, when Ukrainian drones have hit certain targets, have always said that the drone was shot down and the debris fell on the facility—an oil depot, for example.
Russian telegram channels, citing local residents, reported that the characteristic sound of a drone was heard in Toropets, and then there was an explosion. Later, the government of the Tver region reported that the authorities decided to partially evacuate the population “from the territory where the air defense works and the fire is contained.”
Large warehouse
In Toropets there is an arsenal for the complex storage of ammunition, missiles and explosives. This is official information that the Russian state media has written about the missile arsenal more than once.
Russian authorities did not report an explosion at the arsenal. The construction of the combined storage arsenal in Toropets was completed several years ago, according to official reports.
The arsenal includes cold and heated rooms, electrical substations, treatment facilities, water and fuel storage tanks, and more than 100 fire storages.
The Astra Telegram channel claimed that in May and July, drones attacked a military unit in the city of Toropets, resulting in explosions and fires.
From the Ukrainian border to the 107th arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate in Toropets is less than 500 km. The Ukrainian attack drone Lyuty, for example, is capable of flying such a distance in three hours, and it has overcome Russian air defense systems more than once.
Very loud explosion
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky did not directly confirm the agreement with Toropets, but thanked the Ukrainian military for their precision and scope.
“First of all, I want to thank our soldiers who provide our long-term Ukrainian ability. There was a very important result last night on the territory of Russia, it is certain things that weaken the enemy,” said Zelensky. — I thank everyone involved. It’s so precise it’s inspiring. Our special services: Security Service, GUR, Special Operations Forces – thank you!”
The explosion was so powerful that the Norwegian earthquake and explosion monitoring group NORSAR reported that its specialists recorded at least 17 “seismic events,” that is, tremors, near the city of Toropets in the Tver region.
The strongest signal had a magnitude of 2.5, Norwegian experts wrote.
The cause of these seismic events is not stated in the message which is still being studied by NORSAR experts.
