The losses of Ukraine and Russia in the war reached 1 million people killed and wounded.
The Wall Street Journal claims this, citing sources.
According to media reports, the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed is 80,000, and 400,000 wounded. WSJ cites a “confidential Ukrainian assessment” made at the beginning of the year.
Western studies estimate Russian losses differently: according to some sources, the number of dead reaches almost 200 thousand, and the wounded – about 400 thousand. This figure roughly coincides with the data of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which last reported 635 thousand killed and wounded Russians.
The article notes that Ukraine will have a harder time coping with such losses due to its population being four times smaller. But in the long term, the consequences will be “devastating” for both countries, which had demographic problems before the war.
The publication believes that one of Putin’s motivations for starting the war was to increase Russia’s population by absorbing Ukrainians.
