The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the names of 27 candidates for the positions of European Commissioners. It was found out on Tuesday, September 17.
Thus, Kaia Kallas (Estonia) will be appointed as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He will replace Josep Borrell in this post.
The representative of Slovenia, Marta Kos, will receive the portfolio of the European Commissioner for Enlargement, which is important for Ukraine. He will be responsible for cooperation with the EU’s eastern neighbors.
“He will continue to work to support Ukraine, continue reconstruction and support the candidate countries on the path to accession,” von der Leyen said.
Slovakia’s representative, Maroš Šefčović, will be entrusted with the new portfolio of European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Inter-Institutional Relations and Transparency.
Latvian representative Valdis Dombrovskis will be appointed European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity.
Lithuanian representative Andrius Kubilius will become the European Commissioner for Defense and Space.
“He will work to build a defense alliance and strengthen our investment and industrial capacity,” von der Leyen said.
Hungarian representative Olivier Varhelyi will assume the position of Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare.
Polish representative Piotr Serafin will be Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration. His powers include, in particular, the preparation of the EU’s next long-term budget.
