The United States has proposed creating two seats on the UN Security Council for African countries and one for small island states. It was also proposed to reform the Security Council and make changes to the charter.
The US is initiating major changes at the United Nations. This was announced on Thursday, September 12, by the representative of the States of America to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Voice of America reports.
In particular, the United States supports the “inclusive reform” of the UN Security Council, which can effectively meet the challenges of the 21st century.
“We must lead a multifaceted future that responds to the values of the past but also to the realities of the present,” said Thomas-Greenfield.
What the USA has to offer:
-
Create two permanent veto-free seats on the UN Security Council for African countries.
-
Create a new elected seat on the UN Security Council for small island developing states.
-
Together with other states, reform the Security Council and amend the UN Charter.
At the same time, answering a question about the removal from the Security Council of countries that violate the principles of the UN Charter, Thomas-Greenfield said that there is such a mechanism, but it is “very difficult” to implement it.
The US is not proposing changes to the number of countries with veto power in the Security Council. Today such countries are the USA, Great Britain, France, China and Russia.
It is expected that negotiations on the reform of the Security Council could begin in a few weeks during the UN General Assembly.
Let’s remember that the reform of the UN Security Council has been discussed for a long time in many countries of the world. Ukraine is demanding that the Russian Federation be expelled from it, and several other states are demanding an increase in the number of Security Council members.
