The International Committee of the Red Cross responded to the death of its humanitarian mission staff in the village of Verolyubovka in Donetsk region.
The ICRC staff arrived to give local residents fuel briquettes to heat their homes. At the time of the Russian shelling, they were unloading the aid. No locals were harmed in the attack. This was stated by the ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric, as reported on the organization’s website.
I condemn in the strongest possible terms the attacks on Red Cross workers. It is unacceptable that an aid distribution site should come under fire. Today, our hearts are broken, we mourn the loss of our colleagues and care for the wounded, she stressed.
It is noted that the ICRC missions regularly visit the Donetsk region, and their vehicles are marked with the Red Cross emblem. Any attack on the ICRC is a violation of international humanitarian law.
The Red Cross called for respect for international humanitarian law, in particular taking all possible precautions to ensure that those carrying out humanitarian work are not targeted or captured during war.
The National Police reported that three men, aged 40, 41 and 48, were killed in the enemy attack. Two more officers, aged 35 and 41, received shrapnel wounds and mine-explosive injuries. The war crime committed by the Russians was classified under Part 2 of Article 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Let us recall that on September 12, Russian invaders launched an artillery strike on a vehicle with humanitarian aid in Verolyubovka, Konstantinovka community, Donetsk region. Three ICRC workers were killed and two more were injured.
