As winter approaches, this problem gets worse. Therefore, the primary focus of the response must be on health care.
About 10 million people in Ukraine are at risk of mental disorders. This is what WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr. Hans Kluge at a press conference on September 12, reports Ukrinform.
“One of the concerns about winter is the risk of an increase in mental health problems. We estimate that almost 10 million people in Ukraine are at risk of mental health problems, from mild to severe. As it approaches the third anniversary of the war, such challenges are only growing, and the awareness of approaching winter can only worsen the situation,” said Kluge.
According to him, the National Mental Health Support Program, implemented under the patronage of First Lady Elena Zelenskaya with the support of the WHO, is expanding rapidly, but the demand still prevails.
Kluge noted that as the third anniversary of the full-scale war in Ukraine approaches, in conditions where the passage of winter weather can be extremely difficult, the main focus should be on public health and strengthening the recovery response. To date, the WHO has confirmed around 2,000 attacks on Ukrainian hospitals, health workers and patients.
He added that WHO is facilitating the installation of generators and other critical equipment in medical institutions in Ukraine.
“We recently launched a new heating point in Chuguev hospital in Kharkov region – this is an institution close to the front line, which was badly damaged in 2022. It is only one of 15 similar heating points that WHO is installing in 8 regions of Ukraine ,” said the WHO EDB director.
Let’s recall that in April 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed 1,682 attacks on Ukraine’s medical system since the beginning of the full Russian invasion in February 2022, which led to 128 deaths and 288 injuries to the staff of medical. and patients.
