The United States, Great Britain and France are providing Ukraine with long-range weapons on the condition that they are not used to attack the Russian Federation. The President of Ukraine has repeatedly called for the lifting of these restrictions.
The issue of lifting US restrictions on the use of long-range weapons by Ukraine in the war against Russia is now “under construction”. US President Joe Biden said this on Tuesday, September 10, in response to journalists’ questions about when restrictions on the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be lifted, Reuters wrote.
Biden responded succinctly: “We’re doing it now.”
The Times indicates that part of the American administration already supports such a decision.
Note that, until now, the United States has been reluctant to provide or authorize the use of weapons that could hit targets inside Russian territory, fearing that this would lead to proliferation.
The issue of allowing the use of American weapons to strike Russian territory has been raised by Kiev for a long time. Earlier, four US officials said on condition of anonymity that President Joe Biden had given Ukraine the go-ahead to use US weapons to strike inside Russia for the limited purpose of protecting Kharkov.
Subsequently, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that US President Joe Biden’s administration had given Ukraine permission to attack military targets in Russia with American weapons. At the same time, Kirby explained that the authorization is limited to the Kharkiv region, as well as the types of targets that Ukraine can take.
Kirby later clarified that the United States could extend permission to use American weapons for strikes on Russian territory and that the decision would depend on the situation on the battlefield.
In August, the media wrote, citing a source in the British government, that the United States did not respond to Britain’s request for permission for Ukraine to use long-range Storm Shadow missiles on Russian territory for more than a month. However, the US has denied the accusations.
At the end of the summer, Ukraine provided the United States with a list of Russian targets it planned to strike in an attempt to push the White House to lift restrictions on the use of the weapons.
We remind you that the media reported that the United States does not rule out the transfer of long-range JASSM air-to-surface missiles to Ukraine. They may be included in a weapons package to be announced in the fall.
