In Dnepr, a woman was acquitted of murdering her cohabitant, who had beaten her for two years and threatened her daughter.
Marina Polyakh contacted the police 38 times regarding domestic violence, but in all that time they only drew up one report, Obshchestvennoye reported.
During the latest attack, a man previously serving time for murder threatened to kill Marina and her daughter. During the confrontation, the woman grabbed a knife and the man impaled himself on it.
She didn’t want him to live with her, but he didn’t care about her opinion. When she wouldn’t let him into her home, he would smash the windows and set the house on fire. He even attacked the police, but they couldn’t do anything about him, Marina’s lawyer said.
The trial lasted three years. At the hearing on September 9, Marina was acquitted on all counts. Now she plans to help other women who have suffered from domestic violence.
According to the UN, almost every third woman in the world has suffered from physical or psychological violence at least once. In Ukraine, this figure reaches 70%.
