The politician said the need to speed up peace initiatives to end the war in Ukraine, but the German government “has no reason for optimism.”
The Kremlin’s recent statements do not indicate readiness for constructive peace negotiations, Gebestreit said. At the same time, he said, Scholz would not avoid a telephone conversation with Putin if he considered the moment right.
The German government has not yet been able to give a specific date for the next peace conference in Ukraine, Scholz noted. However, according to his advisor, there is a feeling throughout the world that this war must end as soon as possible.
