The drone that crashed in Latvia was a Russian Shahed drone with explosives.
The Commander of the Armed Forces of the country, Leonids Kalnins, announced this on September 9.
The armed forces leadership stated that the appearance of the drone cannot be considered an open military escalation against Latvia, since its target was not that country.
The drone has been deactivated and is currently being analyzed to determine its type and to check for Western components.
Latvia will strengthen air defense on its eastern border, the defense minister said.
The Latvian publication Delfi, citing the country’s Ministry of Defense, writes that the Russian drone flew into airspace from Belarus. According to preliminary information, the object in Latvia did not have “hostile purposes.” The investigation is still ongoing, but according to preliminary information from experts, the drone “did not have a specific purpose of flying into Latvia.”
A representative of the Russian embassy was summoned to the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
