The water in the Desna River washing Chernigov has darkened.
A mass fish kill is being recorded in the reservoir. It will be collected and taken away for disposal to a pre-determined location. City services, environmentalists and the State Emergency Service are working on the site. Acting Mayor of Chernihiv Oleksandr Lomako reported this on Facebook on September 9.
Visits to the beach have been banned in the regional center. Authorities said that the municipal guard is monitoring the situation on site. Control over the sale of all types of fish in Chernihiv has been tightened. The Chernihivvodokanal aeration station is also operating in the area of the crossing.
Lomako noted that Chernigov does not consume water from rivers, but uses water from wells. Therefore, there is no threat to the life and health of Chernigov residents.
Let us recall that at the end of August, toxic substances were found in the Desna River near Kiev, presumably flowing downstream from the Russian border. Residents of the Brovarska, Vyshgorodska and Pirnovsk territorial communities were prohibited from swimming, swimming and fishing.
