A Russian drone crashed in Latvia yesterday, September 7.
The event took place in the Rezekne region located in the east of the country. This was reported by Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs on his page in the social network X.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
We are in close contact with our allies. The number of such incidents on NATO’s eastern flank is growing, and we must respond to them collectively, Rinkēvičs emphasized.
According to Latvian media, it is preliminary believed to be an unmanned aerial vehicle of military significance. It entered Latvian airspace from the direction of Belarus.
The Latvian National Armed Forces told journalists that the drone flew into Latvian airspace on the morning of September 7 and was immediately spotted. According to preliminary estimates, the drone “did not have a specific purpose of flying into Latvia.”
This situation is a confirmation that we must continue the work we have begun to strengthen Latvia’s eastern border, including the development of air defense capabilities and electronic warfare systems that allow us to limit the operation of drones of various purposes, said Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds.
On Monday, September 9, a representative of the Russian embassy will be summoned to the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
