The so-called “election” has long been a farce that has nothing to do with demonstrating democracy, the department emphasized.
On Sunday, September 8, Russia will hold “elections” to local authorities. However, they are not legitimate in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian Crimea. This was stated by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
The department recalled that on Sunday Russia is holding Unified Voting Day, where elections will be held in local authorities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. In particular, the aggressor country is again trying to spread this process in the temporarily occupied Crimea, including Sevastopol.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that the so-called “elections” in the Russian Federation have long been a farce and have nothing to do with demonstrating democracy. In turn, their behavior in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine is a violation of the norms and principles of international law.
“We emphasize again that the results of the so-called “election” in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol are insignificant, and the “election” itself is illegitimate,” the statement said .
The Foreign Ministry also communicated with international partners and reminded that the representatives of the Russian occupation forces operating in the occupied territories of Ukraine and elected during the “elections” were not granted by the Ukrainian side any authority to represent the government of Ukraine at any level.
“Their participation in Russian delegations at international events does not have any legal consequences,” the department added.
All those involved in the preparation and conduct of the so-called elections in the occupied territories of the Ukrainian state shall be liable in accordance with the current legislation of Ukraine.
We remind you that over the past 12 months, more than 20 thousand Ukrainian citizens have left Crimea, which was occupied by the Russians. The people preferred to seek a better fortune for themselves outside the peninsula.
