The General Prosecutor’s Office of Kyrgyzstan has published a list of terrorist and extremist organizations, and the Taliban is not on it.
The General Prosecutor’s Office of Kyrgyzstan, when publishing a list of extremist organizations whose activities are banned in the country, did not include the Taliban movement. This was stated on Friday, September 6, in a statement of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.
There are reportedly 20 organizations on the list, including al-Qaeda, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, the Kurdish People’s Congress (Kongra-Gel), the East Turkestan Liberation Organization, and the Hizbut-Tahrir-al-Islam movement. However, the Taliban, which was recognized as a terrorist movement in Kyrgyzstan in 2006, is not among them.
As noted by the country’s Foreign Ministry, the decision to exclude the Taliban from the list was made after careful consideration by the country’s government agencies. However, this decision has not been officially announced.
“This decision is aimed at strengthening the stability of the region and ongoing dialogue that the Kyrgyz Republic seeks to support the efforts of the international community aimed at ensuring a stable and peaceful environment in Afghanistan and the entire region,” said of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry in a statement.
The Afghan-controlled Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has previously thanked the Kyrgyz authorities for excluding the Taliban movement from the banned list, Radio Azattik reports. A statement released on September 5 said Bishkek’s decision “signals the growing political recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan at the regional and international level.”
The Taliban, who have ruled Afghanistan since 2021, officially call the country the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. De jure, their government is not internationally recognized, but some countries, including Russia, maintain relations with it.
The Kazakh authorities decided to exclude the Taliban organization from the list of terrorist organizations. The President of Kazakhstan, Kasim-Jomart Tokayev, announced this on Monday, June 3, at a meeting with participants in a meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
