Chinese politicians are trying to encourage young couples to marry and have children after the country’s population declined for two consecutive years.
China is ending its international child adoption program as it tries to combat the country’s declining birth rate. CNN reported this on Friday, September 6.
The exception is cases when blood relatives adopt their loved ones, and he added that all pending adoptions through agencies will be cancelled.
Since the early 1990s, China has sent thousands of children for adoption abroad, with about half going to the United States. This happened against the backdrop of the one-child policy, which forced many families to abandon their children, especially girls and infants with disabilities.
However, Chinese authorities have now officially halted the program as they try to combat “a rapid decline in the birth rate and the threat of a demographic crisis.”
The US Embassy in Beijing has already asked the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs for official clarification, as many American families have already submitted adoption applications and are awaiting their approval.
Since the International Adoption Program began in 1992, more than 160,000 have been adopted worldwide. At the same time, American families adopted 82,674 children from China, accounting for 29% of all international adoptions in the United States.
The international adoption program was temporarily suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect children.
