The German magazine Spiegel reported, citing unnamed sources in Berlin, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may personally attend a meeting of representatives of the international coalition of arms suppliers to Ukraine on September 6 at the American military base Ramstein in Germany.
Zelensky’s move is seen as Ukraine’s attempt to secure the necessary volumes of weapons to counter Russian aggression, and in particular, to push partners to supply so-called long-range weapons and consent to use them against targets deep within Russian territory.
The publication’s sources said that Zelensky, with his visit to the meeting of defense ministers of states supporting Ukraine, wants to describe the seriousness of the situation. The president also wants to ask for fresh supplies of other weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and additional air defense systems.
Also, according to the publication, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov will meet with his German counterpart Boris Pistorius in Berlin, and the main focus will likely be on the question of whether Germany will be able to assemble additional arms packages for the coming months, despite the country’s tough budget situation.
