Romania has officially donated the Patriot system to Ukraine. The corresponding decree was published on September 5 by Romanian President Klaus Iogannis.
The decision to transfer was previously approved by the country’s government and parliament.
Romania has decided to transfer one of its two operational Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine on the condition that its allies replace it with a similar air defense system.
The head of the Defense Committee of the Senate of Romania, Nicoleta Pauliuc, stated that the transfer of Patriot to Ukraine “does not mean that Romania will be left without protection.” In addition to the already mentioned second operational complex, Bucharest has five more: two have been accepted into service and three more will arrive soon.
Once Romanian President Klaus Iohannis signs the bill, the government will issue an order to transfer the air defense system to Ukraine.
Romania signed a $4 billion deal to buy Patriots in 2017, its largest arms deal to date.
Romania, which has been a NATO member since 2004, shares a 650-km border with Ukraine. During the full-scale war, fragments of Russian drones repeatedly landed on its territory.
