The announcement to postpone Christmas came hours after prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Edmund González Urrutia, an opposition leader who is running against Maduro in the presidential election.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that in 2024, Christmas in Venezuela will be celebrated on October 1, instead of December 25. On Tuesday, September 3, he published the corresponding video on his Facebook page.
“It’s September, and it smells like Christmas as a sign of gratitude to the people who are fighting, by order, I will move Christmas to October 1,” Maduro said.
This is not the first time that Maduro has announced the postponement of Christmas. In 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, he moved the celebration to October 15, and a year later to October 4. On the occasion of the holiday, the Socialist government led by Maduro usually distributes food packages to residents of poor neighborhoods.
A Venezuelan court has issued an arrest warrant for former opposition presidential candidate Edmund Gonzalez as part of a criminal investigation into the results of the disputed July election.
