Mongolia is a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC and Putin should have been detained on an order from the court’s prosecutor, the EU stressed.
The European Union expressed regret that Mongolian authorities hosted Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and did not arrest him, as required by an International Criminal Court warrant. This was said by EU Foreign Policy Speaker Peter Stano, reports European reality.
The EU is considering the Russian leader’s visit to Ulaanbaatar, despite the fact that Mongolia is a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and Putin must be detained under a warrant from the ICC prosecutor.
“The EU regrets that Mongolia, a state party to the Rome Statute of the ICC, has not fulfilled its obligations under them to implement the arrest warrant. The EU expressed its greatest support for the efforts to ensure full accountability for war crimes and other serious crimes in Russia’s war of occupation against Ukraine,” Stano said.
He noted that the EU supports the investigation being conducted by the ICC prosecutor into the events of the Russian-Ukrainian war, and called on all countries party to the Rome Statute to fully cooperate in this matter.
Let us remind you that in Mongolia they explained why they did not arrest Putin on a warrant from the International Criminal Court because of energy dependence on Russia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly commented on the decision of the Mongolian authorities to accept Putin, despite the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
