The Mongolian government has dealt a blow to the ISS and the international criminal justice system by refusing to arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced this today, September 2.
The failure of the Mongolian government to comply with the mandatory ICC arrest warrant for Putin is a serious blow to the International Criminal Court and the international criminal justice system, Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhiy emphasized. “Mongolia has allowed an accused criminal to escape justice, thereby sharing responsibility for his war crimes.”
We will work with partners to ensure that this has consequences for Ulaanbaatar, he added.
Mongolia recognizes the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023. Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also called on Mongolia to arrest Putin.
According to Bloomberg, the Russian dictator has received assurance that he will not be arrested on the ISS warrant.
Putin arrived in Mongolia by plane today, September 2. Instead of arresting him, the country’s authorities gave him a ceremonial reception with a red carpet.
The visit to Mongolia is Putin’s first trip to a country that is set to arrest him under an ISS warrant.
