The Romanian government approved the bill on the transfer of the Patriot system to Ukraine on September 2. Next is the parliament’s decision.

    .

In June, Bucharest said it would hand over one of its two active Patriot systems to Ukraine on the condition that its allies replace it with a similar air defense system, Reuters reported.

Romania has purchased 7 Patriot 3+ systems from the US, one of which is planned to be transferred to Ukraine.

Four of them have already arrived in Romania – two are operational. The remaining three will arrive in Romania in the near future.

Configuration 3+ is the most modern version of the Patriot SAM system, and is in service with the United States and about 20 other allies. This configuration uses PAC-3 interceptors and an active radar guidance system.

It relies on highly capable radar systems and advanced air-to-air interceptor missiles called PAC-3, which can engage ballistic missiles at ranges of up to 20 kilometers.

The battery contains four PAC-3 missiles, as opposed to the previous PAC-2 version, which contained only one.

The Patriot system costs about $1 billion, and each missile costs almost $4 million.
