German security officials believe that Russia is preparing sabotage on DHL infrastructure throughout Europe.
According to a letter sent by German law enforcement to airlines and logistics companies, information was received about “several parcels sent by private individuals from different parts of Europe that caught fire en route to their destinations in several countries.” DHL reported two such incidents. The suspicious parcels contained electronic devices and containers with liquids, writes tagesschau.de.
In July, a fire broke out at the DHL logistics center at Leipzig Airport. The fire was caused by a parcel arriving from the Baltic States. The fire fell onto the container. German law enforcement agencies believe that this was not an accidental fire, but that the parcel with an incendiary device was sent on purpose.
The message was issued by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and the Federal Criminal Office (BKA) and sent to aviation and logistics companies.
The security forces believe that this was not an accidental fire and assume a possible connection with Russian sabotage. There are concerns that new incendiary devices may have been sent. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe has taken up the investigation.
DHL reports that at least two similar incidents are known. The suspicious packages contained electronic devices and containers with liquids.
Notably, the cost of sending these parcels often “significantly exceeded the value of the goods contained within them.”
A DHL spokesman said:
We have taken measures in all European countries to protect our network, employees, facilities and our customers’ parcels.
The company fully cooperates with the authorities.
Russian sabotage and espionage activities in Germany have increased significantly in recent months. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has repeatedly warned of Russian sabotage, and on June 27, another security alert was issued to businesses.
