During a meeting with US officials, the Ukrainian side handed over a list of targets that Kyiv wants to hit with American long-range ATACMS missiles.
This was reported by Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in an interview with CNN. The minister, along with other Kyiv officials, is on a visit to the United States.
We explained what means we need to protect citizens from Russian terror that the Russians are committing against us, so I hope that we were heard. We are showing that the airfields that are used to strike our cities are within the range of deep strikes, Umerov said.
He assured that Ukraine will continue to insist on the lifting of restrictions to protect Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
They (Russians – ed.) are killing our citizens. That is why we want to contain them, we want to stop them, we do not want to allow their aircraft to approach our borders to bomb cities, Umerov explained.
CNN previously reported that Umerov and the head of the OP Andrei Yermak are heading to Washington with a list of Russian targets for long-range American weapons.
Ukrainian officials will present a list of priority targets in Russia during face-to-face meetings with members of the Biden administration in an attempt to push the United States to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons, the report says.
The journalists’ interlocutors note that without defeating these targets, it will be difficult for Ukraine to turn the tide of the war in its favor.
On August 30, Umerov met with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin; it is still unknown who Yermak will meet with.
The people’s deputy with whom the journalists spoke noted that the territory near the border, which can be hit with Western weapons, is the same territory of Russia.
We consider strikes deep into Russian territory with American weapons to be no more provocative than strikes with American weapons on Russian territory near the border. Both are Russian territory, and it makes no difference how deep the targets are located, he said.
