In order to continue X’s work in the country, Musk will be forced to comply with all court orders and pay more than three million dollars in fines.
In Brazil, a Supreme Court judge ordered the “immediate suspension” of social media platform X in the country. The corresponding decision was made on Friday, August 30, after the deadline set by the court expired, during which the company had to identify a legal representative in Brazil, Reuters reports.
The move is the latest chapter in a long-running feud between Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk, which also includes freezing the financial accounts of satellite internet provider Starlink in Brazil.
In the decision, Moraes ordered the complete and immediate suspension of X in the country to comply with all relevant court orders regarding X, including the payment of fines of 18.5 million reais ($3.28 million) and the appointment of a legal representative in Brazil.
Moraes ordered the telecommunications regulator Anatel to comply with the order to suspend the social network and to confirm in court within 24 hours that it complied with it.
Moraes also ordered that individuals or companies attempting to bypass the block via VPN could be fined up to R$50,000 per day.
Previously, a Brazilian court said that Musk had launched a disinformation campaign and that X was abusing economic power to illegally influence public opinion.
