Humanitarian operations in Gaza are significantly limited due to fighting, insecurity and mass evacuation orders affecting aid delivery routes and facilities.
The UN Food Program (WFP) temporarily suspended the movement of its staff in the Gaza Strip after a vehicle caught fire on Wednesday. Reuters reported this on Wednesday, August 28.
The World Food Program said a convoy of two armored vehicles received “several permits from the Israeli authorities” to approach the Wadi Gaza Bridge checkpoint on Tuesday evening. However, despite all the permits, one of the cars was fired upon and it was hit by about ten bullets. No one was injured in the vehicle.
“Although this is not the first incident during the war, it is the first time that a WFP vehicle has been directly targeted near a checkpoint, despite obtaining all the necessary permits,” the WFP statement said.
The Israeli military has yet to comment on this incident.
The UN said it would hold a meeting on Thursday at the request of Great Britain and Switzerland to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The European Union is calling on Israel for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and compliance with its obligations under international law.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas on the end of the war in the Gaza Strip and the exchange of hostages ended without the parties reaching a final agreement.
