From the White House and the Pentagon to the headquarters of the US European Command in Germany, officials are closely monitoring Ukrainian troop movements.
The United States was initially puzzled as to why Ukraine took such a drastic step – launching an attack in the Kursk region – and now the White House is waiting to see what happens next. The Wall Street Journal writes about it on Sunday, August 25.
“Eyebrows have been raised very high,” a senior US administration official said on a call with reporters.
Now, he said, the Biden administration is carefully waiting to see if Zelensky’s “venture” will bear fruit.
The WSJ said the United States is giving Ukraine space to conduct the Kursk operation, but is trying to avoid public involvement in the issue.
At the same time, American officials agreed that the purpose of the Ukrainian military in the Kursk region makes sense: to force Russia to withdraw troops from eastern Ukraine; destroy the narrative of defeat on the battlefield; improve Ukraine’s position before potential peace negotiations.
“Currently, all three goals have been achieved, although to a limited extent,” said the interlocutor of the publication.
