Both figures saw the detention of the Telegram messenger founder as oppression of freedom of speech and censorship.
The owner of the social network X, Elon Musk, and American journalist Tucker Carlson condemned the imprisonment in France of the founder of Telegram messenger Pavel Durov.
According to Musk, the detention is an advertisement for the first amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech.
“Watch this ad for the first amendment. It’s very compelling,” Musk wrote on social media X.
He later added: “POV: It’s 2030 and you’re being executed in Europe for liking a meme.”
In this regard, journalist Tucker Carlson called Durov’s arrest in France a warning to owners who refuse to censor the truth at the behest of the authorities.
“It was not Putin who arrested him because he gave public freedom of speech. It was a Western country, an ally of the Biden administration and an active member of NATO, that arrested him,” Carlson wrote on his Telegram channel.
Meanwhile, the value of Durov’s cryptocurrency Toncoin, the payments that take place on Telegram, fell by more than 15% immediately after the news of his arrest, according to Binance data.
Russian media, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry, reported that the Russian Embassy in France took the necessary steps to clarify the situation surrounding Durov’s detention, despite the lack of appeal from his representatives and the fact that he is a French citizen.
We remind you that Pavel Durov was arrested in France on Saturday night. The request for his detention was made by the department for combating crimes against minors, that is, security forces that investigate crimes committed by pedophiles. In France, they believe that Telegram has become a big platform for them. Durov faces up to 20 years in prison.
In Russia, a court fined people for liking anti-war posts.
