Sphen and Magic aren’t the only same-sex penguin couple to successfully hatch an egg. The couple also became parents in New York and Spain.
An 11-year-old gentoo penguin named Sphen died in a Sydney aquarium, leaving his partner Magic, with whom he was one of the most famous gay penguin couples, alone. CNN reported it.
Their touching love story became known in 2018, when the couple began preparing for the breeding season. Together they raised two penguins, six-year-old Lara and four-year-old Clancy, and inspired many people around the world.
After Sphen’s death, Magic is brought to the enclosure so that he can understand the loss of his partner. The aquarium team is now focused on supporting Magik as she prepares for her first breeding season without Sphen.
It was previously reported that the penguin was recorded in the Black Sea near the city of Chernomorsk, Odessa region.
