Poland ordered 50,000 rounds of ammunition from German arms company Rheinmetall a few months after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, the Polish army never received them.
The reason was problems with the execution of the contract by the subcontractor, which was supposed to produce ammunition for Poland – the South African company Rheinmetall Denel Munition (this is a subsidiary of the German giant, in which it owns 51% of the shares). This was reported by the Polish publication Rzeczpospolita, citing its own sources.
The supply of ammunition to Poland was blocked more or less directly by the South African government, fearing that they could be sent on to Ukraine. After all, South Africa is closer to Russia, with which it is part of the BRICS alliance, among other things, than to Ukraine, the publication notes.
The Polish Ministry of Defense, in response to the publication’s request about the fate of this contract, reported that “the contract was terminated on July 20, 2023 due to problems with the subcontractor’s performance of the work.”
It is noted that Poland had only about 10,000 155-mm artillery shells by the beginning of 2022, so the country’s Defense Ministry suddenly began looking for suppliers around the world. In particular, another contract, under which deliveries continue, was concluded with South Korea.
