Germany is outraged that Poland has not arrested the suspect in the Nord Stream bombing case.
The WSJ writes that Germany sent an arrest warrant to Poland in June for Ukrainian diver Vladimir Z., suspected of involvement in the gas pipeline explosions. However, Polish prosecutors refused to arrest him until the Internal Security Service had reviewed the case.
Then a delegation of German ministers led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Warsaw for a meeting with the government of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. They asked the Poles to ensure the execution of the order.
However, as the WSJ writes, the Polish official allegedly told his German counterpart that all potential suspects who could have destroyed Nord Stream “should be awarded medals, not arrested.”
Poland subsequently wrote to Germany to inform them that the suspect had managed to leave for Ukraine. Berlin regarded the letter as an “additional image” because Poland had not executed the arrest warrant.
In addition to Ukrainian Vladimir Z., two other Ukrainian citizens are also suspected of attaching explosives to gas pipelines. All three were traveling in the Baltic Sea on the German yacht Andromeda in September 2022.
Vladimir’s last known place of residence was a town near Warsaw. Germany asked Poland to arrest the man and hand him over, but the Poles did not do so.
On September 26, 2022, explosions and gas leaks occurred on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines. They run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany.
Ukraine denies involvement in sabotage.
