The Czech initiative to purchase shells for Ukraine will be financed from frozen Russian funds.
Some of the ammunition, the purchase of which was organized by the Czech Republic in cooperation with other countries, will be purchased with funds from frozen Russian assets.
This decision was made by the European Union.
Czech Defence Minister Jana Černochová said it was “further proof of the allies’ trust” in the Czech Republic and its initiative.
This is a unique opportunity to support Ukraine, use resources that originally belonged to Russia and preserve the public finances of European countries, the minister said.
The supply of ammunition using Russian assets will take place in the coming months.
By using the proceeds from frozen Russian assets allocated by the European Union, we will be able to supply Ukraine with several hundred thousand units of large-caliber ammunition, Chernokhova said.
In June, EU governments agreed to channel €1.4 billion in profits from frozen Russian assets into arms purchases and other support for Kyiv.
