A yacht carrying 22 people has sunk off Sicily. A British billionaire is among those missing.
On the morning of August 19, the 56-metre sailboat Bayesian was caught in a storm. The Coast Guard was able to rescue 15 people from the vessel, and another was found dead.
Six people are missing, including the ship’s owner, British billionaire Mike Lynch, co-founder of software firm Autonomy.
The yacht Bayesian was 56 metres long and registered in the UK. There were 22 people on board.
The missing were British, American and Canadian citizens, according to the Coast Guard. Among the 15 rescued was a one-year-old child.
In recent days, Italy has been battered by storms and heavy rains after weeks of intense heat, with floods and landslides causing severe damage in the northern part of the country.
The wind was very strong. The storm was expected, but not of this scale, a coast guard spokesman in Palermo told Reuters.
