Budapest says issuing “national cards” to Russians poses no threat to Europe

The Hungarian Foreign Ministry accused representatives of other EU member states of a “campaign of lies” against Budapest.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that issuing “national cards” to Belarusians and Russians does not pose any danger to the Schengen zone. He wrote this on Facebook.

According to Szijjártó, Russians and Belarusians will continue to be “subject to thorough checks upon their entry and stay in Hungary.”

At the same time, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry accused “colleagues from Northern Europe and the Baltic countries” of a “campaign of lies” about Budapest.

“Of course, this is unusual on the part of pro-military politicians, but such disregard for the facts is alarming. The fact is that the inclusion of Russian and Belarusian citizens in the National Card program does not bring any risk to the security of the Schengen area, as they will continue to be subject to strict checks when entering and staying in Hungary,” he said.

Let’s recall that in July it became known that after the visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Moscow, Budapest included citizens of Russia and Belarus in the so-called “national card” program, which is given to those who want to work in Hungary for two years with the possibility of extension. That is, Russians and Belarusians can enter the EU through Hungary and move freely to other countries in the bloc. The European Parliament responded by calling for strict measures to protect the integrity of the Schengen area.
