The United States believes that negotiations on a ceasefire agreement and the return of hostages are now at a “turning point”.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken flew to Tel Aviv as part of his trip to the Middle East to try to persuade Israel and Hamas to conclude a ceasefire agreement. Reuters reported this on Sunday, August 18.
The US State Department noted that on Monday Blinken will meet with senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Meetings are also planned with Defense Minister Yoav Galant, Foreign Minister Israel Katz and Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
After Israel, Blinken will travel to Egypt.
Negotiations to reach a ceasefire agreement and the return of hostages held in Gaza are at an “inflection point,” a senior Biden administration official told reporters en route to Tel Aviv. According to him, Blinken intends to emphasize to all parties the importance of bringing this agreement to the finish line.
As Reuters notes, the mediating countries – Qatar, the United States and Egypt – have still not reached an agreement after months of negotiations.
Let’s recall that last week it was reported that Hamas refused to negotiate with Israel.
And on Sunday, Israel announced the killing of two senior Hamas militants.
