The Russian command, faced with a personnel shortage in its ground forces, is trying to stop the offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region with the help of a temporary motorized rifle regiment of the Aerospace Forces.
The publication “Important Stories” writes about this, citing an informed source.
It is noted that this regiment, numbered as “military unit 78986”, was specially assembled from VKS servicemen from all over Russia. It included fighters from security and logistics companies, engineers, mechanics and a small number of flight officers.
They were sent to the infantry from the airfields “Ukrainka” in the Altai region, “Belaya” in the Irkutsk region and “Engels” in the Saratov region. All these air bases are home to heavy bombers Tu-22M or Tu-95, from which missiles are launched at Ukrainian cities, the publication notes.
In addition, the following were transferred to the infantry:
- military personnel from one of the Russian cosmodromes;
- personnel of special forces of the Aerospace Forces;
- personnel of the Voronezh early warning missile attack radar stations deployed along the borders of Russia.
It is unknown how and when the shortage of valuable specialists and security at VKS facilities will be replenished, our source notes. According to him, more than 100 highly qualified technical personnel are needed for the normal functioning of the Voronezh-type radar, the publication notes.
This motorized rifle regiment was created in May-June 2024. It was included in the so-called border cover group of the “North” group. The regiment actually has no permanent deployment point, and the VKS infantry arrived in the border areas several weeks before the breakthrough of the Ukrainian Armed Forces – in mid-July.
According to information published by Russian Telegram channels, the “space infantry” is already suffering losses in the Kursk region:
- On August 7, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive on the regional center of Korenevo in the Kursk region was resisted by emergency and poorly equipped cosmonauts;
- On August 12, 22-year-old Ilya Romanov, who had been transferred to the infantry from the 28th arsenal of space forces in the Tambov region, disappeared in the same area. This is a high-security facility where missiles and satellites are stored;
- VKS motorized riflemen were probably also in the convoy of vehicles burned by a HIMARS strike near Rylsk in the Kursk region on the night of August 9.
