Representatives from pro-government and opposition parties clashed near the presidium of the parliament. The reason is the oppositionist’s accusations against his opponents.
There was chaos in Turkey’s parliament during a debate over jailed lawmaker Can Atalay, who is serving an 18-year sentence in connection with the 2013 anti-development protests in Istanbul. The Financial Times reported this on Friday, August 17.
It was noted that a deputy from Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP), Alpay Ozalan, attacked his opposition colleague Ahmet Şik, who was speaking at the podium in the parliament hall. An opposition deputy sharply criticized the president’s party deputies, saying that the real terrorists are not those labeled by the authorities, but those who sit in the seats of deputies.
Ozalan hit Shik, after which the conflict quickly escalated into a mass brawl near the presidium, in which three deputies received minor injuries. Due to the chaos in the hall, the parliamentary meeting was delayed for 45 minutes.
