Ukrainian defense forces have advanced up to 30 km inland as the crow flies from the Russian border, but the area occupied may be larger.
Ukraine shocked the world with a “rare ground invasion on Russian territory.” This was stated in a Business Insider article on Monday, August 12, citing Western military analysts.
In particular, a military expert from the University of Bath in the UK, Patrick Bury, said that “most observers did not think that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were strong enough to do this.”
Matthew Ford, a military expert and professor of international relations at the British University of Sussex, suggested that in this way Ukraine seeks to pull Russian forces from the south.
In this regard, Matthew Seville, director of military science at London’s Royal United Services Institute, said that some Russian troops have already been moved from Ukraine, but the extent is unknown. He also suggested that Ukraine’s attack on the Kursk region could be connected to other undeclared targets.
“The attack may be aimed at boosting the morale of Ukrainians after months of defense, while it may be an opportunity to get prisoners of war for a prisoner exchange,” he said.
The publication notes that the operation by the Ukrainian Armed Forces could be a nervous test of Putin’s own red lines.
“It is clear that Ukraine’s decision to attack Russia completely mocked Vladimir Putin’s red lines and the West’s fears of escalation,” the publication wrote.
The media remember that Putin announced the possibility of using nuclear weapons if there is a threat to the existence of the Russian state.
“The more Ukrainians move into Russia and the less resistance they get from the Russian military, the more I worry that Putin wants to use a nuclear bomb,” Ford said.
The authors added that the attack was an embarrassment for Putin and a radical reminder of the reality of the Kursk war, “although Putin’s power is unlikely to be seriously damaged.”
Let’s remember that Russia admitted that Ukrainian troops advanced on its territory for at least 30 km. This marks Ukraine’s deepest and most significant advance since the fall 2022 counter-offensive.
