Putin’s use of nuclear weapons would be a red line not only for many NATO allies, but also for many of the Russian Federation’s partners, such as China.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s benefit from the use of nuclear weapons will be far less than the price he will pay for it. This is what Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said on Sunday, August 11, in an interview with the German publication Welt.
He noted that the Kremlin’s nuclear threats should be taken seriously, but should not be exaggerated.
“I don’t see any benefit that Putin will get from using tactical nuclear weapons. He will only risk the death of tens of thousands of people. It will not demoralize the Ukrainians. And Russia’s use of nuclear weapons is will be a red line not only for many NATO allies”, but also for many partners of the Russian Federation, such as China. The cost of using nuclear weapons for Putin is higher than the benefit,” Pevkur said.
The minister noted the importance of the West now increasing arms supplies and ongoing training of the Ukrainian military.
“Ukraine urgently needs more and faster weapons of the West: ammunition, air defense, missiles and precision weapons. If we only want Ukraine to continue fighting, we must continue as before. But if Ukraine wants to win, it needs more weapons,” the minister said.
Let’s remember that in February of this year, Putin threatened “tragic consequences” for countries that dare to send their military to Ukraine.
The EU commented on Putin’s statements, noting that nuclear threats are completely unacceptable and inappropriate. And the United States recalled that they had already warned Russia about the consequences of using nuclear weapons.
