Lithuania has banned the import of Russian gas

Lithuania’s parliament passed a law on Tuesday banning imports of Russian gas, another step in the race to reduce energy dependence on its big neighbor amid Moscow’s incursion into Ukraine. In the spring, the Baltic country, a member of the EU and NATO, stopped buying Russian gas transported by pipeline or through an LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal. The new law allows only countries that do not pose a threat to national security to use Lithuania’s natural gas transmission system and LNG terminal.

The law, however, allows Russian suppliers to use its infrastructure to transport gas to Kaliningrad. After regaining its independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, Lithuania was heavily dependent on Russian gas until it leased an LNG terminal in 2014. In May, Lithuania opened a new gas pipeline connecting the three Baltic states to the European gas network. neighboring Poland.
