The United States has authorized the use of its weapons for strikes on Russian territory, but the ban on ATACMS missiles remains.
Ukraine is in talks with the United States to get permission to use ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike military airfields in Russia. The Washington Post reported this on Thursday, August 8, citing its own sources.
“ATACMS strikes are needed to destroy fighters at Russian airfields, which the aggressor uses for retaliatory strikes.
ATACMS is part of a $300 million military aid package to Ukraine approved by US President Joe Biden in March 2024.
The Ukrainian side first used these missiles on the morning of April 17, hitting a Russian airport in Crimea about 165 kilometers from the front line in Ukraine.
Ukraine had a unique opportunity to attack the Russian Malshevo airbase and destroy Russian aircraft there, but the United States did not allow ATACMS to be used for the strike.
Let’s remember that the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky said that Russian military aircraft should be destroyed where they exist, using all effective means. He emphasized that the pressure on Russian airports is also quite fair.
