Russian “military correspondents” wrote that things in the Kursk region were “more serious than it seemed at first glance,” but other reports about the situation conflicted.

The Ministry of Defense of Russia, the acting governor of the Kursk region Alexei Smirnov and some propagandists have different versions about the events in the Kursk region, the Institute for the Study of War reports.

In particular, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Russian Federal Security Service announced on August 6 that Russian border troops and intelligence officers repelled several raids by Ukrainian forces equipped with approximately a battalion-sized number of tanks and armored vehicle; Ukrainian forces are reportedly advancing on Russian positions near Nikolaevo-Darin and Oleshnya, Kursk region. But geolocation footage from August 6 shows damaged and abandoned armored vehicles about 7 kilometers north of the international border west of Lyubimovka.

In addition, Russian propagandists claim that Ukrainian equipment is visible in the footage, but ISW could not confirm this.

Later, Smirnov and several Russian bloggers warned that the fighting was continuing on the borders of the Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts of the Kursk region. These messages differ from the statements of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB.

Russian “military correspondents” also wrote that things in the Kursk region were “more serious than it seemed at first glance.”

Let’s remember that a day before the Russians announced an attempt by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to breach the border in the Kursk region. In Russian social networks they wrote about the “extraordinary border victory” of the Kursk region as a fait accompli. Public pro-government pages also report border skirmishes and attacks by UAVs and artillery. Eyewitnesses also captured on video Su-25s flying over the region, and a fuel tanker burning in the middle of the road. Representatives of the Main Intelligence Directorate did not comment on the situation in detail, but assured that it was “in no way related to the RDK.” Subsequently, the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced that the reserves of the group of Russian troops moved to the state border with Ukraine in the Kursk region. They also noted that Ukrainian troops in the amount of up to 300 people using 11 tanks and more than 20 armored vehicles attacked Russian units near the state border in the Kursk region.
