Amid widespread unrest in the UK, Elon Musk has said that “civil war is inevitable” and compared the British government’s “repression” of social media users to the actions of the Soviet regime.
The controversial billionaire made a series of manipulative tweets, which caused displeasure from the UK Ministry of Justice.
In particular, Musk claimed that the British criminal justice system allegedly treats Muslims more leniently than far-right activists, comparing Britain’s “repression” of social media users to the Soviet Union. The businessman also published several memes hinting at the violation of freedom of speech in the UK.
“The use of language like ‘civil war’ is in no way acceptable. We are seeing police officers being seriously injured, we are seeing buildings being set on fire, and so I really do think that anyone who has a platform should exercise their power responsibly,” said Foreign Secretary Gaidi Alexander.
The government has called on social media companies such as X to do more to combat the spread of misleading and provocative information online.
Alexander also said on Tuesday that the government would consider strengthening the current Internet Safety Act, which was passed last year and will not be fully implemented until 2025.
