The military junta ruling the African country of Niger has announced it is severing diplomatic relations with Ukraine. Niger is planning to appeal to the UN Security Council over Kiev’s alleged support for terrorist groups.
This happened after Tuareg rebels attacked a convoy of the Russian Wagner Group in Mali. The Malian government believes Ukraine was involved in the attack, the Arabic publication Al Arabiya reports.
A military junta has seized power in Niger and is establishing ties with Russia, writes DW.
Earlier, following the summit of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, who came to power as a result of coups, decided to form a confederation called the “Confederation of Sahel States”.
On August 5, the Malian junta severed diplomatic relations with Kiev over Ukraine’s possible involvement in an attack by Tuareg rebels. In late July, they routed a group of Malian government troops and Russian mercenaries from the Wagner PVK fighting on their side.
In early August, the Senegalese Foreign Ministry summoned the Ukrainian ambassador for allegedly supporting rebels in Mali. Senegal took the Ukrainian embassy’s Facebook post as a justification of terrorism, as reported by the media. The post on the social network is currently unavailable.
The Ukrainian side did not respond to this statement.
Let us recall that at the end of July, Tuareg rebels reported the killing of 84 Russian militants from the Wagner PVK and 47 soldiers of the Malian government army in the north of the country.
The representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, Andrey Yusov, hinted at Ukraine’s involvement in the Tuareg operation in Mali.
The rebels received the necessary information, and not only the information that allowed them to conduct a successful military operation against Russian war criminals, he said on the telethon on July 29, without giving any other details.
