Since 2017, Yahya Sinwar has been the group’s leader in the Gaza Strip, and will now lead the organization’s political wing.
The Palestinian group Hamas on Tuesday, August 6, appointed Yahya Sinwar as the new head of the organization’s Politburo. He will replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was recently killed in Tehran, the BBC reports.
Since 2017, Sinwar has been the group’s leader in the Gaza Strip, and will now lead the group’s political wing. He is now believed to be in the Gaza Strip, although his current location is unknown.
Sinwar, 61, is one of the co-founders of Hamas’s security apparatus and is considered the second most powerful man in the group after Ismail Haniyeh. He rejects any reconciliation with Israel.
Sinwar was elected by Hamas’ 50-member council. Now he is the most influential figure in the organization, experts say.
The IDF in February released a video shot on October 10 that allegedly showed him walking through a Gaza tunnel with several members of his family. “The search for Sinwar will not stop until we capture him, dead or alive,” IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said at a press conference after the footage was released.
We remind you that Ismail Haniyeh was killed in the capital of Iran. One of his guards also died. Hamas later confirmed this information. Iran immediately blamed Israel for the attack and vowed retaliation.
