Air Base 201, a drone base near Agadez in central Niger that cost $100 million to build, provided critical intelligence to militant Islamist groups before the coup.
The US has completed the withdrawal of troops from Air Base 201 in Niger, which has been key to US troops in the region. Reuters reported this on Monday, August 5.
In a joint statement, Niger’s Ministry of Defense and the US Armed Forces said personnel and equipment had been completely removed from the base.
“Effective cooperation and communication between the US and Niger militaries ensured that this exchange was completed ahead of schedule and without complications,” the statement said.
Air Base 201 is located in the central part of the country. It cost nearly $100 million to build and provide vital intelligence to militant Islamist groups before the coup.
It is known that the junta that seized power in the country last year demanded the withdrawal of nearly 1,000 American troops. Niger’s decision to request the withdrawal of US troops came after a meeting in Niamey in mid-March, when senior US officials expressed concerns over issues including the expected arrival of Russian troops and reports that Iran is seeking raw materials in the country, including uranium.
