The European Commission has ordered TikTok Lite to be removed from the EU market. The Commission has reached a settlement agreement with TikTok, so the company will not have to pay a fine.
At the same time, the company is obliged to close TikTok Lite on the EU market and not try to circumvent this decision. Otherwise, it will be fined without further investigation.
The commission also said it would monitor TikTok’s compliance with its obligations.
TikTok Lite is a version of TikTok where users can earn points for watching videos, swearing, subscribing, inviting friends, etc. Points can be exchanged for Amazon certificates or TikTok digital currency for gifts to creators. The EC believes that such a mechanism could negatively affect the mental health of minors and encourage addiction.
TikTok Lite’s rewards feature, which launched in France and Spain, allowed users to earn points for performing in-app actions like watching and liking videos. TikTok Lite is a lower-bandwidth alternative version of the TikTok app that the company offers in some markets.
