A demographic crisis has been recorded in Ukraine: in 2024, the mortality rate was almost three times higher than the birth rate.
In the first half of this year, 87 thousand 655 children were born. In the first six months of this year, 250 thousand 972 people died, which is almost three times the birth rate. compared to the period before the start of the full-scale war, the birth rate in Ukraine has decreased by 1.5 times – 87 thousand 655 children now against 132 thousand 595 in 2021. This is evidenced by the data of “Opendatabot”.
It is noted that the ratio between births and deaths of one to three is one of the key indicators of the demographic crisis. Before the coronavirus pandemic, there were two deaths per child.
The largest number of newborns were registered in Kyiv – 9 thousand 695 children, in Lviv region – 7 thousand 923 children and in Dnipropetrovsk region – 6 thousand 962 children. Few newborns are recorded in the frontline regions. In Kherson and Donbass, 221 and 702 children were born respectively. And in Luhansk region this year, not a single baby was registered at all.
As for deaths, more were recorded in the Dnipropetrovsk region – 27 thousand 374 cases. In the Kharkiv, Kyiv and Odessa regions, 17 thousand 999, 17 thousand 449 and 16 thousand 85 deaths were registered respectively. Fewer deaths were recorded in the frontline Kherson and Donetsk regions and the Chernivtsi region.
