It was a “gross and embarrassing failure” in security that made the killing possible, the sources said.

Iran has arrested more than two dozen people, including senior intelligence officers, military and staff, following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources, on Saturday, August 3.
It stated that we are talking about a “huge and shameful failure” in the security system that made the killing of Haniyeh possible.
“The harsh response to Haniyeh’s killing underscores how devastating a security failure it was for Iran’s leadership that the assassination took place at a residence in the heavily guarded capital of the country hours after the swearing-in ceremony of new president of the country,” the report said.
The newspaper also cited the opinion of one of the experts that the perception that the Iranian authorities cannot protect either their country or their main allies could be fatal for the Iranian regime because it, in essence, is ” signaling to its enemies that if they cannot topple the Islamic Republic, they can behead it.”
As reported, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed on the morning of July 31 in Tehran, where he had arrived for the inauguration of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
After that, Iran raised the red flag of retaliation and announced “interesting and unusual events,” which were considered as an “announcement” of an attack on Israel.
