Brussels is worried that Trump could withdraw support for Ukraine and impose painful tariffs on EU exports.
The European Commission has created a special group to prepare for the possible return of Donald Trump to the White House. The group is developing a strategy in case of a sharp change in the US position on free trade and support for Ukraine. The Financial Times writes about it.
The group was formed by the office of the European Commission Secretary General Ilse Johansson and includes a small number of officials representing the main directorates for trade, competition and external relations. He is preparing for a change in politics after the US elections in November.
“The point is to find out what the consequences can be in any case,” said one of the interlocutors of the publication.
The EU is concerned that Trump could impose painful tariffs on EU exports, withdraw support for Ukraine and force Kyiv to make peace on Moscow’s terms to end the war.
European politicians are also worried about Trump’s threats to pull the US out of NATO or blow up mutual defense provisions for countries he believes are not spending enough on defense.
It was previously reported that the European Union is preparing a two-stage strategy in the field of trade with the United States in the wake of Trump’s victory in the presidential election.
